      Self-Image/Funding Criteria

Securing the future. Promoting visionary science.
      Facilitating innovative applications.

These three principles are followed by the Carl Zeiss Foundation in its funding activities. As a partner for people engaged in visionary and outstanding academic work, it has set itself the goal of facilitating scientific breakthroughs in the field of natural and engineering sciences. With flexible funding programmes and streamlined structures, it aims to offer universities as much freedom as possible to implement their ideas. It considers basic research and application-orientated science equally important.

The Carl Zeiss Foundation is a funding institution in the federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia.

Scientific excellence is the most important selection criterion for all programme lines. Funding decisions are made on the basis of scientific procedures with appropriately designated reviewers.

      Funding criteria

According to § 1 paragraph 3 of the foundation statute, research funding focuses on measures benefiting scientific and mathematical research studies and teaching as well as other sciences underlying the activities of the foundation companies and their affiliated companies. The Foundation's funding activities do not include architecture and clinical medicine.

According to the statute, the foundation's funding activities are limited to state universities in those three federal states in which the foundation and the foundation companies are registered, i.e. Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia.

The funding is advertised for bidding in various funding programmes. In a competitive bidding procedure, the best applications are selected and funded after a scientific review. The funding decisions are based on the scientific quality of the applications.

In the medium term, efforts are being made to balance the funding activities in the three federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia. However, this balance is secondary to the principle of excellence.
